Why do I Return to the Philippines?
Why do I return to the Philippines? There are many reasons, but to sum it up in one word: discovery.
It takes many shapes: self-discovery, in which I piece together parts of how my heritage shapes me; discovery of my lineage and heritage; and discovery of new and exciting experiences. One of my most treasured discoveries began from a chance glimpse at a YTRIP web advertisement. I was conducting an Internet search, and I landed on the link to the web site. After I attended a YTRIP seminar on backpacking, I applied it during my remaining time in Pinas, and has since come in handy.

In my ten short weeks in the Philippines I learned volumes about myself. I learned how much pride and respect I have as a Filipina. I learned that even though I wasn’t born in this country, I am still very much apart of it. Although I grew up in the America, I am still concerned with the future and welfare of the Philippines.
The most beautiful part of the Philippines is its inhabitants. No matter where I’ve traveled, I’ve been received with warmth and overwhelming hospitality. People literally have gone out of their way to help us find our way when were lost, and showed us what makes their part of the country special.

My family is an essential part of what makes me return. I feel saddened that I was not able to spend my childhood with my grandparents, since I live abroad. This past trip, I walked the streets of my Lolo’s barangay, traced his footsteps in his home and pictured his hammock as it used to hang beside the window of his otherwise sparse bedroom. There was no other way I could evoke the memory of Lolo’s bedroom in such detail, had I not been standing inside it.
The Philippines has always been close to my heart. From the majestic Banaue Rice Terraces to the somber walk up Mount Samat, I remember those we have lost to keep this land ours, and how we must continue the fight today. Since childhood I have always been moved by the stories my parents told growing up in Tanauan, Batangas. One of my fondest memories involve taking a trip down memory lane with my parents – from where they went to school to where they got married.

In my fifth visit to Pinas I’ve discovered and re-discovered my beloved pinsans (cousins). We swap stories and stay up late into the morning learning about each other, and strengthening our already unbreakable ties. My cousins all smile and laugh a lot. They are the most gracious, humble people I know. I admire how each cousin helps with the family business, or helps our aging uncles and aunts.
Having stumbled upon YTRIP, I am grateful for the serendipitous encounter. Listening to how the organization was created inspires me, and its mission resounds with me. Like its members, I share the love for the bayan and willingly offer my enthusiasm to promote responsible travel in the Philippines and beyond.
Why do I keep coming back? The Philippines is a vast wonderland – a new experience every time.
